CSUN Receives $200,000 Grant from State Farm for Arts Education for K-12 Students

Cal State Northridge has received a $200,000, two-year grant from State Farm to develop an arts program that will bring thousands of San Fernando Valley K-12 students to the CSUN campus. The State Farm Educational Arts Experience, which is expected to begin next semester, would provide hundreds of K-12 teachers with training in arts education, and then invite them and their students to the campus so those teachers can put what they learned into practice. University officials said during the two years of the grant, up to 500 teachers and 20,000 public school children could be positively affected by the project. “Our grant to Cal State Northridge is part of our continued work to support education,” said Rand Harbert, senior vice president in California for State Farm Mutual Insurance Companies. “We believe the future of California depends on the success of our education system and the ability to give our children a variety of experiences. We are proud of this partnership.” CSUN’s Mike Curb College of Arts, Media, and Communications offers a variety of innovative and nationally acclaimed programs in the performing and visual arts, print and broadcast journalism, cinema and television arts, and communication studies. It is home to award-winning KCSN, the campus’ public radio station. Northridge’s Michael D. Eisner College of Education is a leader in the preparation of educators for our nation’s schools. The college is nationally recognized for its innovative approach in providing exemplary programs to prepare highly qualified teachers, school administrators, counselors, and deaf studies professionals. The college traditionally ranks as one of the largest colleges of education in California, yet offers small classes and personal attention.

Volunteers Honored at Annual CSUN Appreciation Event

Cal State Northridge’s top volunteer honors were awarded to longtime sports enthusiasts Jim and Mary Gorman and political science professor emeritus Warren Campbell at the annual Volunteer Service Awards ceremony on Nov. 6. The Dorothea “Granny” Heitz Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership, honoring alumni or friends of the university who serve CSUN as outstanding volunteer role models, was presented to the Gormans. For over a decade the Gormans have been proud season ticket holders for multiple men’s and women’s programs. While Jim Gorman has held formal leadership positions such as president of the Matador Athletic Association and as a member of the President’s Athletic Advisory and NCAA compliance committees, his wife Mary has been at his side each step of the way serving as a friend and advisor to Alumni Relations and Athletics staff. Jim and Mary generously donated a total of $210,000 in cash and gift annuities to the university to create and support the Jim and Mary Gorman Athletic Scholarship Endowment. Campbell has been awarded the Dean Ed Peckham Award (formerly known as the Emeriti Merit Award). He has taught in the MPA program since 1976 and had served as program co-director from 1985 to 2005. Campbell continues to mentor, teach and inspire Northridge students. He has connected MPA and political science alumni to the university by helping to establish alumni association chapters for those programs.
